The Well | a poem

“The Well”

by Shelly Moore Caron

••

Hide away, hide away,

far from conniving eyes.

Hide so well

you’ll never tell-

a soul starved will slowly die.

Hide away, hide away,

until all you are begins to fade-

like a final breath

whispered in death,

decay and drift away.

Hide away, hide away,

because it’s safe until it’s not.

Stay protected from

the passing storms,

at a detrimental cost.

Hide away, hide away,

safely nestled within these walls.

War rages out there,

we don’t dare

answer when it calls.

Hide away, hide away-

remember how it used to be:

sun on my brow,

his soft-spoken vow,

life flowing effortlessly.

Hide away, hide away,

we have no other choice;

blessed enough

to have tasted it once,

body hidden, we now use our voice.

Hide away, hide away,

Withering to bone-

our well has run dry

because we hide.

Life should never be lived alone.
