Life’s Deep Kiss | a poem

Seedlings spread by wind to land
Far away from mother’s hand
So as to grow in a new home
No fear to shed, it’s all they know

Who am I to preach and teach
Open my hand, extend my reach
Spill what’s gathered in my mind
Through vast experience and time

Ego tamed and soul afire
Manifesting heart’s desire
Pray and pray, beg for hope
We cannot do this all alone

Energy scattered, something’s amiss
We wake up opposite of bliss
Chests heavy, minds already torn
This cannot be why we were born

Foundation cracked, our knees are weak
We medicate ourselves to sleep
Caffeinate to stay awake
This cannot be why we were made

Days spent in monotony
Open your eyes so you can see
We work to justify our play
“Just need to make it through today.”

We lay in bed steeped in dread
Knowing one day we’ll be dead
We fall asleep and dream so deep
Of better things and life so sweet

What I offer isn’t a cure
For a life made dismal and demure
I offer words modest but pure
Easily digested, not obscure

We wear ourselves down to the bone
In search of happiness and home
Contentment is a better goal
Maybe “just okay” is better for our soul

Happiness is a lofty height
We touch it while we are aflight
What goes up, must come back down
What soars above becomes earthbound

The up and down is hard on us
It teaches us much but loses our trust
We learn about the yin and yang
The natural balance of everything

We numb because we fear the lows
Stripping away our desire to grow
Our creativity stomped under heel
We dare not risk, we dare not feel

If you wish for a life of ease
Contentment is the cure for your disease
Be okay with what you have
Mona Lisa’s smile isn’t so bad

But if you wish for a vibrant life
Learn to love your sorrows and your strife
Equally as your moments of bliss
View them all as life’s deep kiss
