“Soul Sediment”

by Shelly Moore Caron

Wise words flow beneath the chaotic chatter of a mind in overdrive.

They battle with my need for validation in order to survive.

Imagine colorful layers of strata as they’ve settled over time:

the bottom layer solid,

the top in motion all the time.

The wind blows

and the sand moves,

shifting its design-

changing everything about me,

hoping one day I’ll thrive.

Macro to the micro,

One reflects the All.

As within so without,

from the largest to the small.

Universal reflection

of a life thought individual.

Crucify the ego

to grasp the “why” behind it all.

We’re all pieces of a shattered whole,

together we are strong.

Expand your mind; remind it-

we know nothing at all.

Everything we think we know

comes from those capable of wrong:

Opinions formed and cast

by individuals headstrong.

Even your holiest of teachers

will admit freely they are flawed.

Remember we are but sacred pieces,

into the Whole we’ll one day dissolve.
